Who could be a hero on Day Zero at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul? That was the question on everyone’s lips on the opening day of competition at Istanbul 2023.

Qualification for finals was the order of business, as reigning champions took to the arena in order to secure an extended stay in the Turkish capital.

Pedro Pichardo tantalised the competition and the crowd by recording the second-longest qualifying jump in indoor triple jump history.

Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson made light work of her women’s 800m heat.

And Jakob Ingebrigtsen started his 1500m title defence.
