The European Athletics Championships got off to a fantastic start in Munich as the first gold medals were handed out.

Richard Ringer sent the home crowd wild as he was crowned marathon champion after a sprint finish, while Poland's Aleksandra Lisowska took first place in the women's. Jessica Schilder picked up the first gold in the Olympic Stadium with a Dutch record throw of 20.24m in the shot put, with Filip Mihaljevic taking the men's competition, and Yasemin Can regained her 10,000m title.
