INDOORS - Victories for Selemon Barega and Gudaf Tsegay in Madrid

Ethiopia's Selemon Barega and Gudaf Tsegay won the men's 3000m and women's 1500m at the World Indoor Tour held in Madrid on Wednesday March 2.

After two close losses to Lamecha Girma in Liévin and Torun, Barega, the Olympic 10000m champion was able to just hold off his fellow countryman, taking the win in 7:34.03 against 7:34.09 for Girma as the Ethiopian duo prevailed over the top Spanish runners Mechaal and Katir. As expected Gudaf Tsegay dominated the 1500m, clocking 3:57.38, as Hirut Meshesha (4:02.22) and Freweyni Hailu (4:03.38).

With their points from Madrid, Lamecha Girma and Gudaf Tsegay will be crowned 2022 World Athletics Indoor Tour winners in their event and earn a wild card for the World Championships in Belgrade (March 18-20), which means Ethiopia can send 3 representatives instead of 2 in these events. 2021 winners, also eligible for a wildcard were Habitam Alemu in the women's 800m, Lemlem Hailu in the women's 3000m and Selemon Barega in the men's 1500m.
