Soufiane El Bakkali, the non-Kenyan man since Los Angeles 1984 to win Olympic gold in the 3,000 metres steeplechase arrived back in Morocco on Sunday.
El Bakkali and and his coach, Karim Tlemsani, were welcomed at Rabat airport by family and friends, top officials from the Moroccan Athletics Federation, and personalities from the world of sport and athletics.
The 25-year-old's Tokyo triumph gave Morocco its first gold medal since Hicham EL Guerrouj's double (1,500m and 5,000m) at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
El-Bakkali, who won in eight minutes, 8.90 seconds on a wet track at the Olympic Stadium, was fourth at the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and on the podium at the last two world championships, but this was his first major title.
