The day before Galen Rupp stepped to the line for the Portland Track Festival 10,000m, we picked his brain on how he prepares for certain types of runners and their styles of play. The packaged short lives on our Youtube channel as an installment in our series: The Game.

A lot of good footage was carted off, catalogued, labeled with masking tape and permanent marker and stored in the Tracklandia archives, including this clip where Galen talks about two pivotal moments in his career that helped him shape his approach to racing and belief in his own abilities.

In the mind of one of the greatest distance runners in American history, his high school rival, and the second fastest 1500m runner of all time exist in coinciding memories where perhaps more memorable than the triumph over the competition was the victory over his pre-imagined version of self.

“One trick ponies don’t last long in this sport” -American Record Holder and 2X Olympic medalist.
