In this video we talk about:
This year the diamond league has been on fire. With 3 world records last time out in the paris diamond league, it would be hard to follow that hype up for the Oslo Diamond league. One thing that was the same was the crowd’s. 2 sell out crowds in a row, is something I’d consider a success for track and field. Yet again the diamond league has seriously impressed with some major stand out performances in the 1500, 5000m and the 400m hurdles… Here’s the break down…
Women’s 400m hurdles
Femke Bol ran 52.30. Which would’ve been a world record a few years ago. Now it’s not surprising at all from Bol. She remains undefeated this year. Heptathlete Anna Hall seems to be doing every event possible right now in the diamond league circuit. She was 5th in 55.28.
Men’s 400m
Wayde Van Niekerk has the most expensive watch in the field with his Richard Mille, he was also the fastest in the field clocking 44.38, to take the win.
Women’s 3000m
The pace was set for 8:31 pace. And it was Alicia Monson who took responsibility of keeping the pace respectable once the pace makers had dropped out. She did enough to hold on the 4th in 8:29. With Beatrice Chebet closing like a demon to take the win in 8:25.
Men’s 200m
Erriyon Knighton lead from gun to tape, running a brilliant bend, finishing in 19.77. Knighton now has the 10 fastest times in history by someone under the age of 20. The 11th fastest time belongs to Usain Bolt. He also Broke Usain Bolt’s meeting record. Knighton hasn’t been the strongest in the home straight compared to other top competitors, but today he continued to pull away. He’s still only 19 years old…
Women’s Dream Mile
We knew the race was going to be a hot pace when the first lap was 62 seconds. With 600m to go 17 year old Haylom was the only one to continue to follow the wave lights paced at 4:17. Even though Haylom did slow in final 200 compared to a fast charging Jessica Hull and Cory Ann Mcgee. Haylom did take victory in a new world u20 record and a meeting record of 4:17.13
Men’s 5000m
Another stacked field in a 5000m race. That seems to be a theme at the diamond leagues this season. The pace was set for the World lead of 12:52. Half marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo was also a big name in the race. With a 2:34 first 1000m we knew the plan was to run a Fast race was certainly on!
It was kiplimo who pushed the pace when the pacer dropped out. Going through 3000m in 7:47. Diamond league are still yet to figure out using split screens so we can see two events going on at once. As most of the moves in the 5000m weren’t seen because discuss took spotlight for 2 minutes
The wavelights seemed all over the place in this competition as they started going at 60 second pace towards the final few laps. Regardless, it was Yomif kejelcha who powered past Jacob kiplimo with 800m to go. Kejelcha in classic Kejelcha fashion pushes anyone who’s trying to overtake him out into lane 3. And after a photo finish it was kejelcha who managed to run 12:41.73 to Kiplimo’s 2nd place 12:41.73 with the tightest of photo finishes. That’s the 5th fastest of all time. You can’t help but think if they attempted that world record from the gun they could’ve got it (maybe).
Women’s 100m
34 year old Marie Josee Ta Lou dominates from start to finish with an electric start and driving away from the world class field including sherika Jackson and Dina Asher smith. Her final time was a meeting record of 10.75.
400m hurdles
Warholm is back after his troubled 2022. Still looking to tire more than usual in the last 100m but he ran a 46.52. Which would’ve smashed the world record back in 2021. It was the 4th fastest time in history. Faster than when he broke the WR at Oslo 2 years ago. It was also a diamond league record.
Men’s 1500m
Possibly the best 1500m race in history, the only one comparable is the Monaco 2015 race. Niel Gourley ran 3:30.38 and came 10th… Jakob won in a time of 3:27.95 closing in a 41 last 300m. That is a new European record. Yared Nuguse’s 3:29.02 was also an American record and Ollie Hoare’s 3:29.41 was an Australian record. Narve Nordas has become the 2nd person from Norway to run sub 3:30, but he also is from Sandes like Jakob Ingbrigtsen and Nordas is coached by Gjert Ingebrigtsen. Brits Josh Kerr and Neil Gourley both ran 3:30 which isn’t bad for their 1500m season openers.
