We examine each of the 11 candidates for Male World Athlete of the Year 2023 after their nominations were revealed last week.
Neeraj Chopra (IND): Men's Jevelin Throw: The Olympic javelin champion became a world champion in 2023.

Mondo Duplantis (SWE): Men's Pole Vault: Mondo Duplantis, the Swedish pole vault star, has won another world title and set a new world record.
Soufiane El Bakkali (MAR): Men's 3000M Steeplechase: Soufiane El Bakkali kept up his great consistency all the way through 2023. He won all five of his steeplechase rounds and set a new personal best time of 7:56.68.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen (NOR): Men's 5000M: Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen won gold and silver in the world 5000m and 1500m races for the second year in a row. This was part of a season that also saw him set a world record and run a world record.
Kelvin Kiptum (KEN) : Men's Marathon In Valencia, near the end of 2022, Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum ran his first marathon in 2:01:53. This got a lot of attention. The 23-year-old may have broken the world record when he ran the TCS London Marathon in April in 2:01:25. It wasn't a question of whether he could do it, but when.
Pierce LePage (CAN): Men's Decathlon: Pierce LePage of Canada had the best race of his life in Budapest, where he scored 8909 points to win the world decathlon title.
Noah Lyles (USA): Men's 200M: Noah Lyles went to Budapest and won three more gold medals, this time in the 100m and the 4x100m relay. He also kept his world 200-meter title.
Alvaro Martin (ESP): Men's 35KM Race Walk: Alvaro Martin won his first worldwide title in the 20km race walk, making him the first person to win a gold medal at the World Championships in Budapest. Five days later, he won gold in the 35km event, which was twice as much as the first prize.
Miltiadis Tentoglou (GRE): Men's Long Jump: Miltiadis Tentoglou won his first world title in Budapest, just like Neeraj Chopra did in the javelin after winning the Olympics in Tokyo. He did it in style. In a performance similar to the one that won him the gold medal at the Olympics, the 25-year-old Greek made the best jump of the race in the final round to win the world title.
